On the community Links page I just put a link for anyone who needs to report a street light outage, under Homeowner Services, it reads: To report a light pole outage: FPL  / Report Power Issue / Street Light. It is easy, just click into Report Power Issue on that page and there is a form you fill out online and submit it to them and they fix it within a few days.

This past week there were two incidents occurring in Waverly Hundred, one an attempted break-in and one break-in which was foiled by the owner of the house. Both incidents were by the same group of people, three in a car, a silver Isuzu suv, and one guy going into the backyard and trying to go through the glass door. These incidents occurred in the late morning, early afternoon. Keep your eyes open and call the police if you see anything unusual.

Recycle Tennis Shoes

I saw this article in the paper today about people just ditching their old sneakers instead of recycling them. They strip the rubber from the shoes, sanitize them, and turn them into mulch for playgrounds or use them in athletic surfaces. Other parts are processed into Nike Grind material and reused. It sounds like a good idea instead of throwing them into landfills. To read more about it, the Nike site: http://www.nike.com/us/en_us/c/better-wo... and find out where all the drop off locations are. They have locations everywhere, one is at Dicks Sporting Goods 11940 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Crossing, Pembroke Pines, also at Dillards at the Mall; and Golf Galaxy at 14530 SW 2nd St. Pembroke Pines and dozens elsewhere that you can see on their site.

If you have any electronics to get rid of, the recyling drop off at ARC Broward is available to us at 10250 N.W. 53rd Street in Sunrise. They accept any kind of TV's, VCR's, computers, monitors etc. Their phone number is 954-577-4160. Our regular drop off site is near Davie Town Hall but they are not accepting anything until March. So if you have any electronics to get rid of, the Sunrise spot is an easy place to drop them off. Their drop off hours are 8:00am - 3:30pm MWF and it is tax deductible.

PROPER COSTUMES: SAFETY IN DISGUISE

• Choose brightly colored costumes or add reflective tape to increase visibility.

• Ditch the masks. They make it harder to cross streets safely. Instead, opt for face paint.

• Choose flame resistant costumes. If buying a costume, check for a “flame resistant” notification on the label.

• Glow sticks or flashlights are another way to increase the visibility of your children.

Avoid pointy swords and sticks. Instead use cardboard and tape to make bendable props and accessories. "

I-75 upgrades: Wider overpass, more noise walls

The next wave of construction on Interstate 75 is about to begin and it will mean big changes for commuters — and residents — in south Broward.

The changes, prompted by the construction of express lanes in the median, include:

• A complete overhaul of the Sheridan Street interchange, with a wider overpass and a new bridge deck.

I-75 construction

I-75 construction I-75 construction

• The free-flow ramps that allow traffic to zip onto Sheridan without stopping will be eliminated. New ramps will be built in their place that stop at traffic signals.

• Homeowners in nine neighborhoods between Sheridan Street and Griffin Road will be getting noise walls beginning in October. The walls should be completed by next summer.

Lauderdale police to use Nextdoor.com to alert residents about crime

By Linda Trischitta, Sun Sentinel

A social network called Nextdoor.com that caters to residents of small communities within cities has a growing number of users in Fort Lauderdale, the city says.

Fort Lauderdale police said Monday it will join the city's use of the site and will send alerts to subscribers about criminal activity on their blocks.

Nextdoor.com is like the backyard fence over which neighbors used to trade gossip and concerns, but is available online or as an app on one's smartphone and offers classified listings, too.

The city said it began using Nextdoor.com in October 2012. As of Tuesday, there were 2,656 people in 62 out of 86 city neighborhoods participating.

Police call it another way to stay in touch with citizens.

"We're noticing a growing trend, that members of our communities are having a hard time communicating with neighbors because of work schedules and other demands," Fort Lauderdale Police Detective DeAnna Greenlaw said. "This is a way for neighbors to communicate, even if they're not face to face with each other."

On December 10th a white pickup truck drove thru our development and stole Christmas decorations from Sedgewyck Circle close to Dykes and smashed up Christmas decorations on Chillingsworth which is off Hawkes Bluff Ave. close to Stirling. It happened just before 10pm. A police report was made, cameras picked up a photo of the guy doing it but didn't get the license plate. Keep your eyes out for this guy, try to write down his license plate number if you see a suspicious white pickup truck driving around at night. Here's the photo the house camera got of the pickup truck.

Just got word from the detective that charges have been filed against the two guys who committed the burglary on Queens Grant awhile back. The third guy was a witness and snitched on them. As far as police presence the first week of October, it had nothing to with a burglary, maybe something domestic, he said it wasn't on the books so not sure what it was, nothing to worry about. He told me that Davie police have a facebook page where people can ask questions and they get answers if you want to check it out. https://www.facebook.com/#!/DaviePolice. Val

As a follow up from the meeting last night, I called the Davie Police Station and got hold of the Detective in charge of the recent robberies in our neighborhood. He said they are totally aware of who the robbers are, they are a group of guys who drive around neighborhoods all over the place and drop people off to knock on doors to find out who's not home dropping them off and driving away while the person goes in the backyard and breaks in and performs the robbery, and then they call the driver of the car when they are done and the car comes back to pick them up and then they drive away. He said at present all the paperwork is being done on these guys and assured me and to let you all know, that he is sure that these guys will be off the street soon, they are taking care of it, they have identified them. So, the bottom line is, if you see ANYONE suspicious, call the police. If someone rings your doorbell, look through the window if you can and if you don't know who they are, don't open the door but let them be aware that you are looking at them so they don't think you are not home. If they look really suspicious though, call the police. If you see someone knocking on people's doors and you don't see a car by them, if they look suspicious, call the police. If you see a car that looks suspicious, maybe in your neighbor's driveway and you know they are not home, call the police. We all have to look out for each other.

After repeated power outages I called FP&L and talked to one of the engineers named Tim Hogans who assured me that they are on top of the situation and are hoping to resolve our power outages problems by the end of this year. Of course this has been going on for years and they always say they are working on it so we can only hope they have figured out what the problems are that cause our power to go out for a minute here, a minute there which creates havoc for everything electronic in our homes. He said they inspect the main feeder line every two years, and between cutting down the vegetation along the wires and getting the nurseries to trim back their trees along the wires, and trying to get people to trim back their trees in their backyards along the wires, and also deal with hardware problems of their own, and lightening strikes, they have their work cut out for them, but all we ask is to have continuous power without a moment outage constantly. If you notice these constant interruptions, contact FP&L and report them.

The City of Sunrise Water Use Restrictions

Sprinkler spraying water

The City of Sunrise supports the all-year, two-day-a-week landscape irrigation restrictions imposed by the South Florida Water Management District and the Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department.

In order to help manage our water resources, the City is implementing a Water Conservation Program; planning for the development and funding of alternative water supply projects; and focusing on other critical renewal and replacement initiatives.

The current water use restrictions are being enforced in our City with the assistance of the Sunrise Police Department and Sunrise Code Enforcement. Pursuant to City ordinance, fines of up to $250 may be assessed for violation of these restrictions.

An overview of the residential restrictions is provided below. For additional details, residents and business owners are invited to visit the SFWMD Web site.

Residential Water-Use Restrictions:

  • For homes with addresses that end in an ODD number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9), lawn watering is permitted on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 12:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and/or between 4:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.
  • For homes with addresses that end in an EVEN number (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8), lawn watering is permitted on Thursdays and Sundays between 12:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and/or between 4:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.
  • No restrictions apply to other outside water uses, such as for car and boat washing, or pressure cleaning.
  • The use of water for firefighting, safety, sanitation, health, medical and other essential purposes is not restricted.

A wild cat a Davie couple say they spotted in their backyard more than a week ago has some residents on edge. Local trapper Robert Leach has set up a cage on the property, hoping to capture the animal. Mayor Judy Paul suspects it may be a bobcat, not a black panther as reported by the resident. "Call it what you want," said Sheldon Friedberg, who called police on Jan. 14 after his wife spotted what she called a black panther pawing at her cat. Friedberg said his wife went outside that night to shoo away what she thought was a black dog. "It wasn't a dog," said Friedberg, who lives in the 6100 block of Southwest 56th Street, northeast of Stirling and Davie Roads. "It had 4-inch fangs. And it's not a bobcat. When it opened its mouth it's like something you see in the movies." Friedberg said the family cat survived the attack. He and his wife had seen the animal before, but thought it was a neighbor's oversized cat, he said. His wife, who appeared recently on a TV news report on WSVN-Ch. 7, declined to comment. "I can tell you this," Friedberg said. "It's a gigantic cat. It's out there. They still haven't caught it." Mark McCarthy, who runs a wildlife sanctuary in The Acreage in Palm Beach County, said he doubts the animal that the Friedbergs say is prowling around their property is a black panther. "A lot of people don't know one cat from another," he said. "People call and tell me they hit a jaguar and I go out and it's a bobcat. Maybe it was a bobcat or cougar and it got in the mud."The mayor also had doubts. "We've got bobcats and they're sometimes dark," Paul said. "We have had coyote sightings out west. Where would a black panther have come from?" Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle had this advice for anyone who spots the animal: Call 911.
